For June, I studied the humble honeysuckle flower. I never noticed that it “hugs” bricks, fences and trees as it grows. That embracing nature has given it an association with togetherness and friendship.

As I learned about the honeysuckle flower, I came across a lovely poem by Phillip Freneau, The Wild Honeysuckle.

I’ve always been familiar with the flower. It would grow along the fences at my favorite childhood beach. Their smell is a strong part of my summer memories. But, I never thought of it as particularly symbolic as it gripped and grew into unexpected places.
It’s a lovely burst of sweetness — peaking out to surprise the eyes.
