As the laziest of food preparers, I have abominable drink-making habits. I make my coffee by simply pouring straight from my Mr. Coffee carafe into my chipped mug. I drop a dash of flavored creamer in the top. I don’t bother to stir. The end result? Literal clouds in my coffee. The top is cloyingly sweet. The dregs are bitter. From top to bottom, the drinking experience gets harder.

Many of my days feel like this. Nothing particularly bad wakes me up. I don’t have an infant anymore and I have a job that I don’t hate. Two things that make waking up beyond bearable. As the morning progresses, I feel pretty good. I’m a planner, you see. And I have a planner. Each day is tightly packed with lists, meetings, photoshoots, tasks, playdates, errands, and pickups — written neatly on the little lines.

I modestly pretend I don’t have lovely handwriting when women compliment me. But, it’s my closest equivalent to a rocking pilates body. I worked hard for those neat letters and I like the attention.

As each day whooshes — hour to hour — my planner unravels. Lines get scratched out. Notes go into the margins. Clients make me panic. Little comments get under my skin. I end in a whirl that feels a little harsh and more bitter than when I started. Life getting to me and all that.

I make tea by squeezing honey from a bottle into the bottom. I stick in a tea bag. I pour hot water over it. I don’t bother to stir. The top layer is a little — shall we say — leafy. Woody? Perfumy? Herbal? It’s water with things floating in it. But the bottom is lovely. Sweet and warm — perfectly blended. A little treat and the end of my hard work.

I’m trying to make more days look like this. Ending on a high note — even if it’s artificially sweetened.
