When Pantone first released Emerald as the color of the year for 2013, I was surprised at its vibrancy. In my mind, the tone is darker because my brain aligns with the lowlights of the gem. I see dark green satin or mossy, muddy tones. However, they selected a classic fashion jewel-tone version of Emerald — a series of colors that dominated fashion, beauty, and home design during the 2010s.
This particular shade of green looks almost preppy — somewhere between a Kate Spade Green and Kelly Green with a touch of blue.
Emerald: The Pantone Color of the Year 2013
There’s something a little bit schoolgirl and a little bit socialite about Emerald. It’s pretty without being sweet like pink or purple. The color can stand well on its own. But, it also complements similar jewel-inspired hues like sunshine yellow, amethyst, coral, and sapphire.
I also like it against earth tones — and so does the Pantone team.
The 2012 color of the year, PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, provided the energy boost we needed to recharge and move forward. Emerald, a vivid verdant green, enhances our sense of well-being further by inspiring insight as well as promoting balance and harmony.
Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity, no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.
“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

Color Ideas with Pantone’s Emerald
I put together my own color combinations for Emerald. I found myself thinking about retail advertising situations as I made them. The color seems ripe for a winter moment against tan and camel tones.

I put together a mood board to collect my thoughts about this bejeweled tone.
