Quilted Fashion Styles are still trending up for Fall 2023

By |2023-07-11T13:35:28-04:00July 11, 2023|Communication Theory|

I was talking to one of my clients lately about quilted products and consumer behavior for Fall 2023. This visual style and material haven't reached their peak yet as searches are still climbing on Google. The quilted trend, and patchwork styles, resurfaced in 2020. The look rode the wave of stay-home, stay-alive, stay-real that we embraced. Grandma's pajamas but, make it chic. Just Put Down the Thesaurus and Nobody Gets Hurt

You may refrain from ululating. This multifarious utilization of ill-placed declamation generates superfluous gregariousness. Many writers rely on the thesaurus tool in word processors — a grade-school habit. They substitute their text to boost character count. Sometimes, it's an attempt to add a little spice or sound smarter. Many of these words are close in meaning but, aren't exact synonyms. As a general rule, don't use a word the first time you see it. You probably don't have a complete grasp of its meaning and use. Furthermore, it isn't part of your voice as a writer. So, it will lower [...]

The Rule of Three

By |2021-09-30T09:25:22-04:00September 30, 2022|Communication Theory, Content Marketing|

Friends, Romans, Countryman, the rule of three will diminish your blood, sweat, and tears as you write through the good, the bad, and the ugly. The rule of three creates a powerful pattern that readers intuitively recognize. We're conditioned to find sets of three in the world around us. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness Faith, Hope, and Love Veni, Vidi, Vici Stop, Look and Listen Sex, lies, and videotape Government of the people, by the people, for the people Unwept, unhonored, unsung Duty – Honor – Country Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato Better, Faster, Stronger [...]

Shorter Sentences are Smarter Sentences

By |2021-10-01T14:00:55-04:00July 1, 2022|Communication Theory, SEO|

New writers often assume longer sentences signal a higher level of intelligence. They try to create complex sentences by combining thoughts. They force unusual punctuation. However, I often break apart these lengthy statements as a freelance writer in Lynchburg, VA. My reason? Shorter sentences are smarter sentences. Experienced writers value precision over complication. You must say the most with the fewest words. “I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” ― Mark Twain In fact, grammatical mistakes and poorly-expressed ideas create long sentences. These thoughts are broken up by misplaced phrases, unfinished comparisons, [...]

Does this ellipsis. . . make me look old?

By |2021-09-23T10:39:09-04:00March 24, 2022|Communication Theory, Content Marketing|

I admit to my own affair with the ellipsis (. . . ). My infatuation began as I sought moody, poetic punctuation and that seductive ellipsis is so fraught with meaning. Place it at the end of a clause and the reader becomes breathless. What comes after this tense phrase? Who knows? You must read on . . .  The ellipsis and I broke up quickly during college. Professors, and later editors at publications, didn't appreciate the rollercoaster ride from those three little dots. I learned quickly. Say what you're going to say. Then, move along to that next thought. [...]

Social Marketing Theory

By |2021-02-04T02:02:50-05:00May 29, 2021|Communication Theory|

Not to be confused with social media marketing, Social Marketing Theory has the primary goal of "social good." This contrasts most marketing which has a "financial" motive. Related topics often include public health, or behavioral changes. This large industry applies many commercial marketing practices to non-commercial goals. Theory Overview Combining several related theories, Social Marketing Theory focuses on how to promote socially-valuable information. Social and welfare organizations use these to either boost or discourage behavior. The theory creates a framework to design, launch, and evaluate information campaigns. Campaigns identify the target audience based on the behavior the group is trying [...]

Closing the Knowledge Gap (Knowledge Gap Theory)

By |2021-02-04T01:34:58-05:00April 10, 2021|Communication Theory|

Nestled among related communication theories, Knowledge Gap Theory tries to address a severe inequality between those who can process and apply knowledge, and those who can't. This divide is ongoing — and growing. It's a key factor for anyone who aims to dispense new, useful information to the mass market. New ideas can't take hold in people who are not currently equipped to process knowledge. Knowledge Gap Theory and The Knowledge Divide In America, there is a deep division between those who can find, assess and share knowledge and those who struggle with the process. Researchers refer to this as [...]

The Science of Color in Branding

By |2021-03-26T18:18:37-04:00March 18, 2021|Communication Theory, Graphic & Print Design|

In our culture, color has meaning. That's the science of color in branding. Over the years, color theory (and color psychology) has had a huge influence on design. For branding colors visually signal aspects of the brand. The main debate around the science of color revolves around the source of this meaning. Some think our interpretation of color meanings comes from an innate (from a biological impulse) source. Others believe we learn it (from use in society). Choosing brand colors requires a little bit of science and a little bit of art. The Science of Color Psychology At this time, [...]

How to Make Your Sales Team Work With Your Marketing Team

By |2024-03-28T13:58:03-04:00February 22, 2021|Communication Theory|

Unifying your sales team and marketing team starts with communication. Currently, sales and marketing departments can combine leadership principles together with top tech. Below is my core strategy for bringing these teams together. Sales Team Versus Marketing Team Integrating sales and marketing processes streamline their efforts. Whether they are separated into two departments or positioned under one executive, their functions always overlap. Marketers promote products or services to prospective buyers, salespeople close deals quickly. In this arrangement, sales and marketing departments meet frequently, refer to the same data, and align their goals. They complement each other’s efforts.  Businesses can create [...]

How to Talk about Creativity

By |2021-03-26T19:36:19-04:00February 1, 2021|Communication Theory|

I encounter creative people through artist interviews, lifestyle columns, and business profiles. As I put together each story, I challenge myself to uncover the genius behind their work and relay their value to my audience. Sometimes, the audience struggles to define creativity — substituting technical skill for creative ability, like when an artist sketches a perfectly lifelike representation of an object. Creativity is a way of thinking. Creativity is actually the ability to combine previously unrelated mental elements in a novel, useful way. For example, Einstein was creative because he could bring together ideas to create a new theory. Never [...]
